About Recovery

There are many options for alcohol and drug recovery programs available but all share the common goal: To sever physical and psychological dependence on alcohol and drugs. The most important question is, which alcohol or drug recovery program is right for you?

Finding what is right for you depends on your level of alcohol or drug addiction. Today it is just as likely an individual will need a drug recovery program for prescription drugs such as Oxycontin, Vicodin or Adderall as street drugs like heroin and methamphetamines. Detoxing the body from alcohol or drugs is the first stage of drug recovery treatment and should take place at a drug rehab center or a specialized facility with medical supervision. A safe environment is crucial as the withdrawal process from alcohol and certain drugs such as benzodiazepines can result in life-threatening seizures. Medication or holistic therapies may be used to help ease discomfort.

Once physical dependence is severed and the individual is stable, the critical work of severing psychological dependence begins.

No one method has proven best at severing psychological dependence and for this reason many alcohol and drug recovery programs offer a variety of approaches. What works for one person may not be as effective for another. A 20-year-old heroin addict may respond differently to group therapy than an alcoholic housewife. Different levels of addiction require different levels of treatment but it is generally recommended an individual be placed in a safe environment for a period of time so he or she can concentrate solely on recovering from alcohol or drug addiction. This can range from drug rehab inpatient facilities to residential recovery programs to sober living homes.

Whether you struggle with alcohol, prescription drugs, or street drugs like heroin, the level of alcohol or drug recovery services best for you will depend on the level, duration and intensity of your alcohol or drug use. It’s important at any level that a drug recovery program takes into account not only your personal history of drug use but also possible contributing factors such as family environment, trauma, and chemical imbalance. Effective drug recovery programs address the whole person, not just the alcohol or drug use. Identifying underlying issues and behavior patterns is the key to changing them.

Modifying behavior that contributed to alcohol or drug addiction doesn’t happen overnight. Inpatient drug rehab may initially be required as part of a drug recovery program but it’s only the beginning. Continued support and guidance to live free is alcohol and drug addiction is essential. A sober living environment that offers qualified staff members and continued counseling can help solidify behavior changes that not only make the transition to a sober life easier, but lasting.
